Isuzu

Isuzu is a Japanese car producer, one of the largest producers of medium and heavy trucks and buses in the world.

The history of the company started in 1916 when the industrial group Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. was established. The group launched the production of cars. The first passenger cars appeared in 1916. The first launched model of trucks was A-9.

After merging in 1933 Ishikawajima Automotive Works with the company Dot Automobile Manufacturing Inc., the alliance got the name Automobile Industries Co., Ltd., and the manufactured truck got the name Isuzu. The name is claimed to be in honor of one of the Japanese rivers. In 1949 the company got its present name Isuzu Motors Limited.

In 1953 after concluding the agreement on technical assistance with the English company Rootes, Isuzu produced its first passenger car. In 1959 the 2-ton truck Elf characterized by an economical diesel engine DA640 and excellent passing ability in combination with high carrying capacity and long serviceable life was launched. In 1971 Isuzu sold 34.2% of its shares to General Motors. The division of the company - Isuzu Motors America – was founded in the USA in 1975.

Its first cross-country car Isuzu developed in 1985 – it was Rodeo Bighorn, which acquired the name Trooper for the export. This model is a competitor to Mitsubishi Pajero. In 1998 the company, being in the crisis, turned off the production of passenger cars. It produced the cross-country car Frontera for the company Opel. At that time General Motors increased its share in Isuzu up to 49% and started producing trucks in Poland – Isuzu Motors Polska.

At present Isuzu is successfully developing diesel engines with improved ecological characteristics which are of great demand on the market.
